Important repost/reminder from the school nurse, opt out deadline Friday, 3/20/26
To: Parents/Guardians of ALL DuBois students:
Update on Postural Screening at DuBois.
The Postural Screening Program for Grades 5, 6, 7, and 8, dates are set:
For students who have PE 3rd quarter, screenings will be on 3/24 and 3/26. For students in PE 4th quarter, screenings will be conducted on 4/14 and 4/16. If your child is absent, they will be screened later.
Massachusetts General Laws (M.G.L. c.71, s.57) require that all public school students in grades five through nine be screened annually for the early detection of spinal problems. This is not a diagnostic service, but a screening program to identify children who need further medical evaluation.
The screening consists of observing the student's back while standing and bending forward, and will be conducted by physical education teachers and nurses. Students are screened separately and privately. The results are recorded in the confidential school health record. If your child has any unusual findings, the school nurse will perform a rescreening. If a positive finding is confirmed, you will be notified and asked to take your child to see a healthcare provider.
Students are asked to remove their shirts. Females should wear a bra, bikini top, halter top, or tank top for more accurate back observation. If students do not have clothing that allows for observation of the back or refuse screening, they will not be screened, and a notice will be sent to their parents or guardians stating that screening was not done. Follow-up should be with the student's healthcare provider, with documentation submitted to the school nurse.
Parents can opt out of any school screenings. If you choose not to have your child participate in the Postural Screening Program, please notify me in writing by 3/20 at robyn.aloisi@bhrsd.org. Again, the deadline to opt is Friday, March 20th, 2026
If I do not hear from you, I will assume consent.
Most children who have annual physicals will not need postural screening done at school because their primary care physician (PCP) has already done it. If your child has had a physical exam this school year, AND you know you have not submitted it to me, please forward a copy to me as soon as possible. My fax number is 413-288-7454; your PCP office can also fax directly to me.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions about postural screening.
Thank you,
